A luxury glamping experience on the North Coast 500

This little beauty for two is packed full of character and all mod cons. Cromag (Gaelic for Shepherd’s crook) sits within it’s own private garden with parking and fantastic views of Lochcarron and the surrounding hills. (Check out the video below to see what is 50m from your doorstep!) Glamping at its best and the perfect base to explore the magic of Wester Ross, Skye & Lochalsh or as a great stop over on the world class North Coast 500 route.  I am a local artist, Lochcarron born and bred and will be on hand to share local knowledge and help make your visit a memorable experience.

Hope to be welcoming you soon for a bit of highland hospitality!

Boat trips run from Plockton and Shieldaig.

GOLF

Lochcarron’s nine hole golf course with clubhouse and tea room are in a spectacular setting beside the loch at the entrance to the village. Further afield there are courses at Gairloch and Strathpeffer.

Lochcarron

The beautiful village of Lochcarron (Lochcarrann in the native Gaelic) takes its name from the sea loch itself which is long and fjord like. Whitewashed houses stretch along its shores for approx. 2 miles with a scattering of smaller outlying settlements.

The village is the largest in the locality and boasts a number of amenities including two award winning grocery stores, both with petrol pumps; PO; cash point; friendly hotel; popular café(s) and bistro; medical centre; library: information & heritage centre and a village hall. On the sporting front the village has its own shinty club, 9 hole golf course and sailing club as well as children’s adventure playgrounds.

Close to Lochcarron

The smaller townships of Strome & Ardaneaskan are a few miles towards the mouth the loch and make for a lovely cycle or short drive. Stop off at Lochcarron Weavers in Mid Strome, walk up to the deserted village of Stromemeannach on the hillside above, admire the views further along from the ruins of Strome Castle or take in a spectacular sunset from the bench at the end of the road at Ardaneaskan with Plockton and the Skye’s Cuillin mountains in the distance.

Five miles away at the head of the loch you’ll find Strathcarron with its hotel and train station, one of the stops on the famously scenic Kyle Line and a short distance further on brings you to Carron Pottery and Restaurant and Attadale Gardens.

Day Trips

NORTH

The road north of Lochcarron passes through the small village of Kishorn (6 miles) with views of the Cuillin mountain range on Skye and the imposing Bealach na Ba (Pass of the Cattle), the highest road ascent in Britain. Continue directly on to Shieldaig (8 miles) or follow the Wester Ross coastal trail over the famous Pass and round the Applecross peninsula with its stunning beach at Sand and scattering of crofting townships (37 miles). Beyond picturesque Shieldaig the landscape gives way to the majestic Munro mountains of Torridon, a haven for hillwalkers and climbers (8 miles). The direct route back to Lochcarron is 22 miles

Further north of Torridon, but still accessible as a day trip, are Inverewe Botanical Garden, Gairloch with its sandy beach and Ullapool, a bustling village and ferry port for the Western Isles.

SOUTH

Strathcarron station (5 miles away) at the head of Loch Carron is one of the stops on the world famous Kyle Train Line. The pretty little village of Plockton with its distinctive palm trees is situated at the mouth of Loch Carron (14 miles). Take the back road to Kyle (6miles) through the quaint crofting township of Duirinish or via Balmacara Square with its woodland walk, café and home interiors shop then across the bridge to the Isle of Skye. Its attractions include Talisker Distillery and Dungevan Castle. The Kylerhea/Glenelg ferry is an alternative and memorable short crossing back onto the mainland where you can stop off at the ancient Glenelg brochs, see the Kintail mountains and the renowned Eilean Donan Castle at Dornie. The 22 mile journey back to Lochcarron offers stunning views from the south side of the loch.

A short selection from our 260+ 5 star reviews.

Both Lochcarron and the surrounding areas are absolutely stunning! We were continuously blown away by the views throughout our entire stay. The shepherds hut itself is equally as beautiful: cosy, comfortable and surprisingly spacious! The shower and other facilities were spot on – we couldn’t have asked for anything more. Sheila’s countless recommendations of things to do came in incredibly handy. The Bealach na Bà road to Applecross was an unforgettable experience and we loved following the scenic coast road from Applecross to Shieldaig, with views looking out onto Skye – all thanks to Sheila’s recommendations. We also loved how easy it was to access the Isle of Skye from Lochcarron. We spent a lovely day exploring the beaches there too! Cannot thank Sheila and Jim enough for such a memorable stay. We will most certainly be back one day. Thank you!

The Shepherd’s Hut is the perfect, cosy hide-away for 2 looking for a truly relaxing, recharging the soul break. Quirky on the outside, lovely and homely on the inside with all the modern facilities and luxury you need. Right on the shores of Lochcarron, it’s the ideal base for exploring Dornie, Kyle, Plockton, Applecross, Shieldaig and Torridon. We so wish it was ours, and just for us, but have to say we highly recommend a visit. Guarantee you’ll be smitten too! Thank you to Sheila and Jim for sharing this little treasure.

Ali (February 2020)

Cannot thank Sheila and Jim enough for a weekend of perfection in their beautiful hut. It was a haven after a long drive in the snow, so carefully decorated and warm and cosy. In an astounding location, we enjoyed long walks in the wintry wilderness and then had the joy of settling in for the long evenings with books and hot chocolate in absolute comfort. Sheila was the perfect host, with great recommendations of walks and catering to our every need, whilst giving us plenty of space so we could enjoy the seclusion. Couldn’t recommend this lovely spot more highly – we hope to come back asap! X

Had a fantastic time in Lochcarron. The shepherds hut was very comfortable and had everything we needed. It was great to have our own garden, it was very private with amazing views. Sheila and Jim were lovely hosts and gave us loads of great recommendations for day trips – the highlight had to be spotting dolphins in Shieldaig! Thanks for a lovely holiday!

Rachel (August 2020)

Amazing little hut, has everything you need and more, we stayed in 4 different (similar priced) huts along our NC500 trip and this was by far the best! Would defiantly recommend!

The Shepherd’s Hut in Lochcarron is absolute luxury. It’s in a stunning location with great amenities and is the cosiest place you are ever likely to stay, yet feels like it is spacious and comfortable. Sheila is an excellent host – welcoming and very detailed in the directions to find the property. There were lots of little extras that made the stay special – lovely soap, shampoo and biscuits! Lochcarron is beautiful and has the best Spar I’ve ever seen! Easy to get food and lots of excellent eateries if you don’t want to cook. Worth checking out The Bealach nearby for excellent coffee too!

Valerie (June 2018)

This is probably one of my favourite airbnbs ever – it is super cosy but has everything you need (very modern appliances!). The electric heater makes this a great place to snuggle up in after a day of exploring the amazing places nearby. Sheila is a lovely host and made the check-in easy. Would definitely recommend this place and hope to come back at some point myself! (2 days were not enough, would have loved to stay longer.)
